Like any hardworking tool, cutting boards do take a beating as we slice, dice, and prepare a variety of foods on their smooth surfaces each day. However, unlike other materials that can take the heat of a dishwasher cycle, or handle a dose of full-strength bleach to kill germs and bacteria, natural wood products require some specialized care to keep them clean, sanitized, and well-maintained.

We've put together a handy list of tips and tricks to keep your Born of Timber cutting board in tip-top condition.

Tip #1: HANDWash your board after every use

Wash your entire cutting board, including the underside and edges, with dish soap and warm water making sure to remove anything that’s stuck to the surface with a soft sponge or lint-free rag. Do not let it sit submerged in water, or leave it sitting dirty next to the sink. Most people only wash the top, and that can actually end up warping your board. When moisture reacts with wood grain, it swells, and if the swelling isn’t uniform, it can warp the board. A cutting board that rocks or wobbles usually means that only one side was washed. DO NOT WASH YOUR BOARD IN THE DISHWASHER!

Tip #2:

use lemon and salt to deep clean your board and remove lingering odors

Every month or so, treat your board to a spa day by giving it a deep clean with a cut lemon and a healthy handful of kosher salt. Sprinkle the salt on the board then rub with the cut lemon, with the cut side touching the board. Lightly squeeze the lemon as you rub to release its juice. Rinse your board and let it air dry.
